Elaine’s regular voice was what could be identified as a woman’s voice—not exactly high-pitched, but feathery, dainty, soothing. When she explained herself and how trance works for her, she did so straightforwardly, without much emotion. Elaine explained that she has some “regulars”—spirits who come through her during trace—sometimes it was her twin sister, who had passed away, sometimes it’d be a spirit named Gray Wolf. But most often, she worked closely with a spirit guide named Jonathan James Hunter, born in Britain in 1845 (whom she’d gone on to research, track down, and apparently—or supposedly—verify).

So he waits until I’m ready, he asks, and then we’ll go ahead and he’ll start to speak. It [feels] sort of like I’m sitting in my own body and he’s sitting in it as well. You’re in the background and you’re listening to his conversations, like I’ve gone drowsy and his head is up here and I’m down here. It feels rather strange because you feel very drowsy but you can still listen to his voice, but it’s above your head.
